Sun Mar 09 22:41:37 UTC 2025: ## Russia Claims Territorial Gains in Ukraine Amid Impending Peace Talks

**JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia** – As peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine are set to begin in Jeddah on Tuesday, Russia has claimed significant territorial gains in the Sumy and Kursk regions. The Russian Ministry of Defence announced the “liberation” of several villages, including Novenke in Sumy and several others in Kursk, a claim yet to be verified by Kyiv. Analysts suggest the capture of Novenke could disrupt crucial Ukrainian supply lines.

These developments come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his commitment to a “constructive dialogue” with US representatives ahead of the Jeddah talks. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of strong frontline positions for effective diplomacy, highlighting the ongoing efforts to defend Ukrainian territory.

The upcoming talks, involving high-level US and Ukrainian officials, will focus on achieving an initial ceasefire and establishing a framework for a broader peace agreement. US envoy Steve Witkoff will be present, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will also meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The talks follow a period of strained relations between Ukraine and the US, stemming from a dispute over a mineral deal and subsequent cuts in US intelligence sharing and aid. Despite these tensions, both sides have indicated a willingness to engage in meaningful discussions to find a resolution to the conflict. European leaders, meanwhile, have pledged increased defense spending and continued support for Ukraine. However, the US has remained cautious about Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.
