Nalgonda, Telangana – A Nalgonda court delivered a significant verdict today in the highly publicized Pranay Kumar murder case, sentencing one of the accused, Subhash Kumar Sharma, to the death penalty. Several other accused received life imprisonment.
Pranay Kumar was murdered on September 14, 2018, allegedly due to his inter-caste marriage with Amrutha. Maruthi Rao, Amrutha’s father, orchestrated the murder, driven by his disapproval of the union. Eight individuals were charged in the case, including Rao, Sharma, Asgar Ali, Abdul Bari, M.A. Kareem, Sravan Kumar, auto driver Nizam, and Maruthi Rao’s car driver Shiv. Police filed a chargesheet in 2019, citing charges under the SC/ST Atrocities Act and murder. Rao subsequently died by suicide in March 2020.
Following a trial that lasted over five years, the Nalgonda SC/ST court concluded proceedings recently and delivered its judgment today. While several accused received bail in 2019, Sharma remained in custody. The court’s decision has brought a conclusion to a case that captivated the state of Telangana.
