Mon Mar 10 13:52:17 UTC 2025: ## Air India Flight Diverted After Lavatories Clogged with Passengers’ Waste

**Chicago, IL –** An Air India Boeing 777-300ER flight (AI-126) traveling from Chicago to Delhi was forced to return to its origin airport on March 5th after the majority of its lavatories became unusable due to passenger-caused blockages. Images obtained by NDTV show various items, including clothing, plastic waste, and even a blanket, retrieved from the aircraft’s plumbing system. While these specific items weren’t from flight AI126, they are representative of similar incidents on other Air India flights.

Approximately five hours into the flight, over the Atlantic Ocean, eight of the twelve lavatories malfunctioned. With many European airports imposing night operation restrictions, the aircraft returned to Chicago. Air India stated the decision prioritized passenger comfort and safety. Upon landing, all 300 passengers were provided with accommodation and alternative flights.

Air India acknowledged the incident and confirmed their investigation revealed polythene bags, rags, and clothing were flushed down the toilets, causing the blockage. The airline emphasized passenger discomfort and apologized for the disruption to travel plans. They issued a public plea for passengers to refrain from flushing inappropriate items down the toilets, citing previous instances of blankets, underwear, and diapers being found in the plumbing.
