**New Delhi** – The Indian Parliament’s budget session is set to witness a series of high-stakes confrontations as the government pushes key legislation while facing stiff opposition. The government aims to pass the Finance Bills, completing the budgetary process, and will also table the Manipur budget.
However, the opposition, particularly the INDIA alliance, is gearing up for a robust response. The Congress will strategize today for the session’s second half, expected to include coordination with other INDIA parties.
A major point of contention is the Centre’s three-language policy, which has ignited widespread protests in Tamil Nadu and other southern states. These states, led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, also strongly oppose the upcoming delimitation exercise, fearing a reduction in their parliamentary seats due to successful population control programs. While Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured them of no seat loss, based on a personal assurance from Prime Minister Modi, the apprehension remains.
Further fueling the opposition’s ire is the upcoming Waqf Amendment Bill, which the government is pushing for swift passage. The opposition is also poised to raise concerns about alleged duplication in EPIC numbers, sparking accusations of fake voters, and the potential impact of reduced tariffs on US products on Indian farmers and manufacturers. The treatment of Indian immigrants in the US is also expected to be raised. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has already voiced concerns about the tariff reductions. The coming days promise a tense showdown in Parliament.
