**Dallas, TX** – Former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban has publicly criticized the team’s trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, claiming the return was inadequate. In an interview with WFAA, Cuban stated that while he wasn’t involved in the decision-making process, he believes the Mavericks should have received a significantly better package in exchange for the perennial MVP candidate.
The trade, which sent Dončić to the Lakers in February, saw the Mavericks acquire Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. Cuban contends that a more favorable deal would have included four unprotected first-round picks in addition to Davis and Christie. He emphasized that he learned of the trade after it was completed, highlighting a shift in power dynamics following his sale of a majority stake in the team last December.
While acknowledging that he no longer holds the final say on basketball decisions, Cuban expressed concern over the team’s communication strategy following the trade. He noted the lack of transparency surrounding Anthony Davis’ injury status, which was reported as a left adductor strain since his debut with the Mavericks. Cuban added that the team’s current communication challenges stem from a lack of proactive public engagement.
Despite his criticism of the trade, Cuban maintained that he has no regrets about selling his majority ownership stake, citing his children’s future as a primary factor. The Lakers, meanwhile, have experienced a winning streak since acquiring Dončić, currently holding the second spot in the Western Conference.
