**GAZA CITY/JERUSALEM** – Israel dramatically escalated its pressure on Hamas Sunday, ordering an immediate halt to Gaza’s electricity supply in a bid to secure the release of remaining hostages. This action, coming a week after Israel blocked all aid to the war-torn territory, has been condemned by Hamas as “blackmail.”
The move comes as both sides prepare for fresh talks on a fragile truce, initially agreed upon in March. While the first phase of the truce led to the release of 25 Israeli hostages and the return of 8 bodies in exchange for approximately 1,800 Palestinian prisoners, a stalemate persists over the second phase. Israel wants to extend the first phase until mid-April, while Hamas demands immediate negotiations to permanently end the conflict. Their demands include a comprehensive hostage exchange, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, a permanent ceasefire, reopening of border crossings, and lifting the blockade.
Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced the electricity cut in a video statement, declaring that Israel would utilize all available means to secure the return of hostages and ensure Hamas’s removal from power. Hamas officials countered, describing the action as a desperate and unacceptable tactic. The electricity cut particularly impacts hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in tents, facing plummeting night-time temperatures.
The situation in Gaza is described as dire. Hamas representatives met with Egyptian mediators to urge the resumption of unrestricted aid deliveries. While a Hamas spokesman reported positive indications following the meetings, the electricity cut casts a shadow on the prospects for a swift resolution. Israel’s delegation is expected in Doha on Monday for further talks.
The ongoing crisis has also prompted international involvement. US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Hamas, threatening further destruction of Gaza if the remaining hostages are not released. Meanwhile, US hostage envoy Adam Boehler expressed optimism that a deal could be reached within weeks to secure the release of all hostages. Currently, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, including five Americans, four of whom are confirmed dead.
The conflict, which began after Hamas’s October 7th attack, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Israel reported 1,218 deaths, mostly civilians, while Hamas estimates at least 48,458 deaths in Gaza, largely civilians. The ongoing humanitarian crisis and political impasse highlight the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. Proposals for Gaza’s reconstruction and future governance remain under discussion.
