Mon Mar 10 06:16:26 UTC 2025: ## Alappuzha Municipality Launches “Aero Fert,” Organic Fertilizer Made From Waste
**Alappuzha, Kerala, March 10, 2025** – The Alappuzha municipality is set to launch Aero Fert, a new organic fertilizer produced from processed organic waste, on March 17th. The initiative stems from the municipality’s successful decentralized waste management system, utilizing 400 aerobic composting units across the city. These units transform organic waste into fertilizer within 45 days, which is then sieved and packaged in 2kg and 5kg bags, selling at ₹15 per kg.
The fertilizer has undergone lab testing and has already been successfully trialled with local farmers. The municipality plans to establish sales outlets near the composting units to ensure easy access for consumers. Chairperson K.K. Jayamma expressed optimism about the product’s widespread acceptance.
This project is a significant step forward following the closure of the Sarvodayapuram landfill site over a decade ago due to public protests. While the municipality plans a second phase of bio-mining at the Sarvodayapuram site to address legacy waste (estimated at 30,011.69 cubic meters), this process has yet to begin, despite the selection of a contractor in August 2024. Officials believe bio-mining will resolve this long-standing environmental issue and allow the site to be repurposed.
