Mon Mar 10 12:46:13 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra CM Says Aurangzeb Tomb Removal Must Be Legal, Cites ASI Protection

**Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra –** Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has stated that while there is widespread support for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the process must adhere to legal procedures. The tomb’s status as a protected site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation granted during the previous Congress government’s tenure, complicates the matter.

Fadnavis’s comments came in response to a call by BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, for the tomb’s removal. The Chief Minister affirmed a shared desire for the tomb’s removal but emphasized the necessity of a legally sound approach given its ASI protection.

This statement follows recent controversy sparked by Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi’s praise of Aurangzeb, resulting in his suspension from the Maharashtra legislative assembly until the end of the budget session.
