Sat Mar 08 15:27:31 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Official Highlights Underrepresentation of Women’s Work in India’s GDP
**Madurai, Tamil Nadu –** Madurai Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan addressed the underrepresentation of women’s contributions to India’s GDP at a Women’s Day event held at Thiagarajar College on Saturday. Ms. Vijayan attributed the lower-than-global-average figure to a failure to accurately account for women’s work, emphasizing that gender-specific job descriptions are a product of societal conditioning. She called for collaborative efforts to improve the situation.
College secretary Hari Thiagarajan echoed these sentiments, citing media reports that place women’s contribution to the GDP at only 18%. He stressed the need for increased female participation in higher education and employment, believing that women in leadership roles will drive positive change. The event also included speeches by college principal D. Pandiaraja and the felicitation of competition winners.
