Sat Mar 08 09:23:31 UTC 2025: ## Impeached South Korean President Released from Prison

**Seoul, South Korea –** Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from prison on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, after a Seoul court overturned his detention. The court’s decision, made a day earlier, allows Mr. Yoon to stand trial for rebellion charges without remaining in custody.

Mr. Yoon’s arrest in January stemmed from his controversial December 3rd declaration of martial law, which triggered widespread political unrest. Following his arrest and indictment by prosecutors, the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to impeach him, suspending him from office.

The Constitutional Court is currently reviewing the impeachment, with a decision to either dismiss or reinstate Mr. Yoon pending. If the impeachment is upheld, a national election will be held within two months to select his successor.

The Seoul Central District Court justified Mr. Yoon’s release by citing concerns over the legality of the investigation and the expiration of the legal detention period before his indictment. Mr. Yoon’s legal team had challenged the investigative agency’s authority to probe the rebellion charges.

Television footage showed a jubilant Mr. Yoon waving to and bowing deeply to supporters gathered outside the detention center, waving South Korean and U.S. flags.
