Sat Mar 08 16:29:02 UTC 2025: ## Shiv Sena (UBT) Demands Marathi Menus in Mumbai Restaurants

**Mumbai, March 8, 2025** – The Shiv Sena (UBT) has called for mandatory Marathi-language menus in Mumbai restaurants and eateries, escalating its push for greater use of the state’s official language. The demand follows a recent mandate for Marathi signage outside shops.

In a letter to the Mumbai city collector, Shiv Sena (UBT) functionary Krishna Pawle argued that unlike other states, Maharashtra restaurants predominantly use English menus. Pawle cited the practice of using local languages in other states for both menus and online payment systems as a point of contrast. He emphasized that this initiative is not intended to discriminate against other languages but aims to honor the Marathi language and the sacrifices of the 106 people who died during the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, which fought for a Marathi-speaking state including Mumbai.

Pawle’s letter comes on the heels of comments by senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi suggesting that newcomers to Mumbai need not learn Marathi. Pawle countered this sentiment, stating that the proposed measure is vital to uphold the dignity of the Marathi language and its people. The demand highlights the ongoing debate surrounding language and cultural identity in Maharashtra.
