**Kolkata, March 9, 2025** – The mother of a 31-year-old junior doctor, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last August, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for justice. Speaking on International Women’s Day, the grieving mother expressed her desire to meet the Prime Minister, highlighting concerns about women’s safety in West Bengal.
The doctor’s murder sparked national outrage. While Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was sentenced to life imprisonment in January, both the CBI and the state government appealed for the death penalty. The Calcutta High Court, however, upheld the life sentence in February.
The mother lamented the lack of a death certificate seven months after her daughter’s death and questioned the safety of women, even within a hospital setting. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul expressed confidence that the Prime Minister would grant the parents a meeting, while Trinamool Congress leader and state Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya affirmed the right of citizens to seek an audience with the Prime Minister, crediting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the initial arrest of the perpetrator.
