**Coachella Valley, CA –** The biennial Desert X art festival has returned to the California desert, showcasing a collection of thought-provoking installations that explore themes of truth, permanence, and environmental responsibility. The free event, which attracted 600,000 visitors in its previous iteration, features works scattered across the Coachella Valley, challenging attendees to a unique outdoor art treasure hunt.

Among the highlights is Sarah Meyohas’s mesmerizing work utilizing intricately curved metallic mirrors to project the words “Truth Arrives in Slanted Beams” across a long stucco ribbon. Meyohas explained that the piece, created using caustic technology, aims to address the current climate of political division, stating it’s a reflection of the light and truth, not a trick.

In contrast, Jose Davila’s “The act of being together” presents a powerful statement with a massive stack of 16-ton marble boulders quarried in the Chihuahua Desert. The imposing structure, reminiscent of megalithic sites like Stonehenge, serves as a commentary on the ongoing trade tensions between the US and Mexico, highlighting the enduring presence of natural elements amidst political flux. The installation’s creation, however, was complicated by recent tariffs imposed on both sides of the border, according to Desert X artistic director Neville Wakefield.

Further emphasizing the theme of sustainable building materials, Ronald Rael’s “Adobe Oasis” utilizes a robotic arm to 3D-print clay and straw walls, referencing the region’s traditional adobe architecture. Rael advocates for a renewed appreciation of this fireproof material, especially in light of the recent deadly wildfires in Los Angeles that destroyed buildings constructed with less sustainable materials.

Desert X, which features artists from around the globe and draws heavily on materials sourced from Mexico, runs until May 11. The festival encourages exploration and reflection on the complex issues shaping our world, using the stark beauty of the desert landscape as a powerful backdrop.
