**Beed, Maharashtra –** The Maharashtra Congress launched a two-day “Sadbhavana Yatra” (Harmony Rally) on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, to promote communal harmony in the state. The rally, which began in Massajog village, Beed district, commemorates the murder of village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, who was killed last December while attempting to stop extortion targeting a wind energy company.
State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal declared Deshmukh a martyr, highlighting his sacrifice in fighting against an “immoral mindset.” Sapkal emphasized the family’s commitment to justice without resorting to communal blame, contrasting this with those who exploit religious and caste divisions for political gain.
The rally’s route, covering 51 km over two days, was chosen deliberately. Beed district has recently experienced heightened communal tensions and criminal activity, prompting the Congress to initiate this initiative to restore social harmony. Sapkal criticized the “divide and rule” tactics employed for political advantage, echoing the legacy of British rule.
The rally also serves to address the controversy surrounding recently surfaced photos and videos depicting Deshmukh’s murderers laughing during the attack. These images led to the resignation of Beed MLA and Food Minister Dhananjay Munde. The Congress aims to raise awareness about democratic values, social harmony, and the need to prevent such violence. The rally will conclude on March 9th with a gathering in Beed city, including prayers at Narayangad and Bhagwangad.
