**Vellore, March 8, 2025** – Justice V. Bhavani Subbaroyan, a judge of the Madras High Court, addressed the International Women’s Day celebrations at VIT University today, emphasizing the significant strengthening of laws aimed at protecting women, children, and senior citizens. Justice Subbaroyan highlighted the bolstering of existing legislation such as the Dowry Prohibition Act, the Hindu Succession Act, and the Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act, along with the implementation of new laws like the POSCO Act. She noted the progress made towards gender equality, citing the substantial number of women judges in the Madras High Court and subordinate courts across the state.
G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor of VIT, delivered the presidential address, stressing the crucial role of education in women’s empowerment. He cited statistics revealing that women perform 66% of global work and contribute 56% to global food production, yet earn only 1% of the total income and own less than 1% of the global property. He highlighted the low representation of women in global parliaments, with only 10 out of 193 countries achieving around 40% female representation, compared to India’s 14%. He asserted that education is the key to addressing this disparity.
The event also saw the inauguration of a workshop for Team Asena, VIT’s first all-women racing team. The workshop was attended by Vandana Jain, co-founder of Zanskar Securities Private Limited, and VIT vice presidents Sankar Viswanathan and Sekar Viswanathan.
