Sun Mar 09 02:57:24 UTC 2025: ## Cyclone Alfred Brings Devastating Floods to Australia’s East Coast

**Brisbane, Australia – March 9, 2025** – While Tropical Cyclone Alfred weakened into a tropical low before making landfall, its torrential rains continue to lash Australia’s east coast, causing widespread flooding and leaving one person dead and dozens injured. The cyclone, the first to threaten the Queensland coast in 51 years, spared the region from its destructive winds, but the ensuing deluge has proven equally devastating.

Heavy rainfall is expected to persist for several days, leading to flash and riverine flooding across Queensland and New South Wales, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. A 61-year-old man died after being swept away by floodwaters near Dorrigo, New South Wales. Furthermore, a collision between two military trucks involved in the emergency response injured at least 36 people, with eight sustaining serious injuries. Other incidents included a partially collapsed apartment building on the Gold Coast and a tree falling through a home.

The storm has caused the largest power outage in Queensland’s history, impacting 330,000 homes and businesses. New South Wales also experienced significant power disruptions, affecting as many as 45,000 premises. While many have since been reconnected, the extensive flooding continues to pose a significant threat. Emergency services have conducted numerous flood rescues, with the deceased man being the only fatality amongst 36 successful rescue operations. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and heed all warnings.
