RAMANATHAPURAM/DINDIGUL/THENI, Tamil Nadu, March 8, 2025 – International Women’s Day celebrations across Tamil Nadu saw significant financial support provided to women’s self-help groups (SHGs). In Ramanathapuram, Dairy Development Minister R.S. Rajakannappan distributed ₹66.35 crore in loans to 799 women’s SHGs, highlighting the state government’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment. He noted that ₹495 crore had already been disbursed to 7,288 SHGs in the district, exceeding expectations for 2024-25. The minister also highlighted the success of state schemes like ‘Magalir Urimai Thogai’ and the morning breakfast scheme, which have inspired other states.
Meanwhile, in Dindigul, Food and Civil Supplies Minister R. Sakkarapani distributed ₹127.11 crore in loans to 1,926 women’s SHGs. He emphasized the role of the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women in reaching even the most impoverished women through SHGs, providing training and financial assistance. The district now boasts a total of 10,050 rural and 3,964 urban SHGs. Minister Sakkarapani further detailed loan disbursements over the past three years, totaling billions of rupees.
In Theni, District Collector Ranjith Singh also participated in the celebrations, distributing ₹47.44 crore in loans to women and women’s SHGs. Across the three districts, the combined loan amount distributed on International Women’s Day reached well over ₹200 crore, reflecting a substantial investment in women’s economic independence in the region. Marathon races and other events further marked the day’s significance.
