Sat Mar 08 10:30:17 UTC 2025: ## Local Scientist Makes Global Strides in Space Therapeutics

**Chennai, March 8, 2025** – Swathi Sudhakar, a rising star in the field of biomedical engineering, is making waves internationally. From humble beginnings as the first in her family to attend college, Dr. Sudhakar has achieved remarkable success, culminating in a recent honorary visiting fellowship at Yonsei University in South Korea.

Dr. Sudhakar’s journey began in Theni district, Tamil Nadu, where she completed her schooling despite frequent family relocations. She went on to earn a biotechnology degree from the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, followed by an M.Tech in Biotechnology from Anna University, where she received a gold medal. An internship at IIT Madras proved pivotal, leading to her PhD in Biology and Biophysics from the University of Tübingen, Germany, completed in just three years.

In 2022, she returned to India and joined IIT Madras as an assistant professor. She established her own laboratory, focusing on innovative diagnostics and therapeutic tools, and has filed over 15 patents, with one already granted and two under review.

Her groundbreaking research on space therapeutics, specifically addressing osteoporosis in astronauts, earned her a nomination by the Department of Science and Technology to represent India at a BRICS meeting last November. This work, conducted in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), involves developing nanomaterial-based therapeutics to combat bone loss in microgravity. Early results from animal models show significant promise.

Dr. Sudhakar’s achievements serve as an inspiration, highlighting the power of perseverance and dedication in achieving scientific breakthroughs with global impact.
