**Chennai, March 8, 2025** – V. Ramaswami, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, passed away at his Chennai residence on Saturday morning following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 96.
Mr. Ramaswami, born on February 15, 1929, had a distinguished legal career spanning several decades. He began his legal journey after graduating from Madras Law College, practicing civil and criminal law before becoming an Additional Government Pleader and later the State Public Prosecutor. He was elevated to the Madras High Court in 1971, subsequently becoming Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1987, and finally a Supreme Court judge in 1989.
His tenure was marked by an impeachment motion in 1993 related to alleged extravagant spending during his time in Punjab and Haryana. The motion ultimately failed, and he retired from the Supreme Court in 1994. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
