THRISSUR, INDIA (March 8, 2025) – As temperatures soar in Thrissur, Kerala, the local zoo is taking extraordinary measures to ensure the well-being of its animal residents. With summer heat reaching peak levels, zookeepers have implemented a comprehensive plan to keep animals cool and hydrated.

This includes installing artificial ponds and sprinklers in various enclosures, providing frequent showers for animals, birds, and reptiles. Big cats like tigers and lions have access to special swimming pools, while leopards enjoy regular showers. Other animals, including deer, hippos, and ostriches, receive water-rich diets and extra hydration. Reptiles are provided with water-filled tanks and earthen pots for cooling.

Zoo Superintendent T.V. Anil Kumar explained that the zoo’s abundant trees provide natural shade, but the added measures are crucial to combatting the intense heat. Water consumption has tripled, necessitating the use of four large wells to meet the increased demand. The zoo is committed to providing a comfortable environment for all its animals, ensuring their health and well-being throughout the summer months.
