**Mumbai, March 8, 2025** – The women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra issued a shocking demand on International Women’s Day, urging President Droupadi Murmu to grant women immunity from punishment for one murder in response to escalating violence against women.
The demand, outlined in a letter to the President by NCP women’s wing president Rohini Khadse, cited the recent gang-rape of a 12-year-old girl in Mumbai and India’s ranking as Asia’s most unsafe country for women, according to the World Population Review Survey. Khadse argued that women are driven to desperate measures by the pervasive violence and inadequate law enforcement. She referenced historical figures like Maharani Tara Rani and Ahilya Devi Holkar who took up arms to protect their lands, questioning why contemporary women should not be allowed to fight back.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar criticized the ruling Mahayuti alliance for alleged fraud concerning the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a scheme providing women with ₹1,500 per month. Wadettiwar accused the alliance of failing to deliver on promises to increase the monthly stipend and imposing exclusionary criteria, urging women to hold those in power accountable. He expressed shame and pain at the ongoing violence against women and called on them to use their voting power to effect change.
The contrasting statements highlight the volatile political climate in Maharashtra and the intense focus on the issue of women’s safety in the wake of International Women’s Day. The NCP’s controversial demand has sparked widespread debate and underscores the urgent need to address the pervasive problem of violence against women in India.
