Sat Mar 08 08:02:05 UTC 2025: ## Lebanese Woman’s Resilience Defies Orientalist Stereotypes: A Remembrance
**Beirut, Lebanon** – On International Women’s Day, a tribute is paid to Um Adnan, a Lebanese woman whose life story challenges stereotypical portrayals of Arab/Muslim women. Um Adnan, who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, lived a life marked by immense hardship and unwavering strength. Born in 1939, she married a Palestinian refugee and raised eight children, enduring the losses of three, including one during the Lebanese civil war and another in a car accident. Her home in Chehabiyeh, a South Lebanese village frequently targeted by Israeli attacks, was repeatedly subjected to conflict and destruction.
Despite facing the constant threat of violence, including the 1982 Israeli invasion and the 34-day war in 2006, Um Adnan displayed remarkable resilience. She maintained her household, cared for her family, and exhibited a kindness that touched those who knew her. The author, who spent time with Um Adnan and her family, describes her as embodying an everyday heroism that countered the often-negative and inaccurate portrayals of Arab women in Orientalist discourse.
Even during the Israeli occupation of South Lebanon (1978-2000), when her son Hassan fought with the resistance, Um Adnan remained steadfast. Her home, though damaged, provided refuge for the author on multiple occasions. The author recounts a touching anecdote of a marriage arranged between Hassan and the author, an attempt to secure Hassan a US passport. Although unsuccessful, this highlights Um Adnan’s welcoming nature and her support for her son.
Tragically, Um Adnan’s home in Chehabiyeh was recently destroyed in another Israeli military operation. Nothing was salvaged, leaving only memories of her strength and unwavering spirit. This International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of Um Adnan’s life, a testament to the resilience of women in the face of conflict and adversity. Her story stands as a powerful counter-narrative to Orientalist tropes and an enduring symbol of strength and dignity.
