Fri Mar 07 08:11:23 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Emphasizes Empowerment, Not Sympathy, for Women

**NEW DELHI, March 7, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India today asserted that women require empowerment, not sympathy, to achieve equality in society. The statement was made by Justice Trivedi, one of two female justices currently serving on the apex court, during the hearing of a sexual harassment case from Tamil Nadu.

The comment arose after a senior advocate representing the accused suggested that public sympathy lay with the survivor. Justice Trivedi corrected the lawyer, stating that women need strong legal implementation to achieve empowerment, not mere sympathy. The advocate subsequently agreed, acknowledging the need for women’s empowerment both within and outside the home.

The case involves an accused who has been imprisoned for seven months on charges stemming from an alleged assault. The defense argued for a sentence reconsideration, characterizing the injury to the survivor – a mark on her neck – as minor. However, the court clarified that the injury was the result of a strangulation attempt with a nylon rope, a finding confirmed by two lower courts.

While acknowledging the defense’s arguments, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu state government to review the sentence, focusing specifically on its appropriateness. The court’s emphasis on empowerment underscores its commitment to ensuring strong legal protection and justice for women.
