**LOS ANGELES, CA** – After a tumultuous run marked by last-minute renewals and near-cancellations, the CBS police drama *S.W.A.T.* has officially been canceled. The eighth and final season will conclude in May.
The show, starring Shemar Moore as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, has enjoyed a complex relationship with the network. Initially canceled in May 2023 after six seasons, it was unexpectedly revived for a seventh and final season. A further surprise renewal for an eighth season followed in 2024. However, this time, CBS has decided not to renew, ending the series permanently.
Sources indicate that CBS did not engage in renewal negotiations this year, unlike previous years when eleventh-hour deals were struck with the show’s studio, Sony Pictures Television. This decision comes amidst a wave of cancellations at CBS, including *FBI: Most Wanted* and *FBI: International*, both from outside studios.
*S.W.A.T.*, known for its strong performance on Friday nights and its filming in Los Angeles – a rarity for broadcast dramas – is being mourned by its cast and crew. Executive producer and showrunner Andrew Dettmann expressed his sadness, praising the “extraordinary group of people” involved. Former showrunner Shawn Ryan highlighted his concern for the crew now facing unemployment. He had previously voiced concerns about the show’s future given a pending ownership change at CBS.
The cancellation leaves *S.W.A.T.*’s fate sealed, making way for new programming, including two new dramas already slated for next season’s schedule. The show, based on the 1975 TV series and 2003 film, will conclude its run in May, leaving behind a legacy of thrilling action and dramatic storylines.
