**TIRUCHI, March 7, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU) in Tiruchi is appealing to the state government for emergency funding to address critical infrastructure issues plaguing its campus. Built at a cost of ₹79 crore, the 25-acre university, operational since 2014, suffered from a lack of maintenance until 2024, resulting in significant deterioration.
According to Registrar S.M. Balakrishnan, the university’s neglected infrastructure hampers its ability to offer doctoral programs and conduct income-generating workshops. Problems include damp walls, floor settling, and broken tiles across the 20 campus blocks. The inadequate visitor accommodation forces the university to use residential quarters intended for staff. Overcrowding in women’s hostels is another pressing concern, with three students sharing rooms. A new women’s hostel is needed, university officials say.
Following a 2023 request by the then Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala, the state government allocated ₹4.96 crore for repairs. While some work was completed, significant refurbishment remains necessary. TNNLU reports an annual funding deficit of ₹95.45 lakh for 2023-2024 and is requesting ₹3 crore annually for the next five years to cover the shortfall until student fees can be revised. The university houses 650 students and over 30 faculty and staff.
