LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the New York Knicks 113-109 in overtime Thursday night, extending their winning streak to eight games. Luka Dončić led the Lakers with 32 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds, while LeBron James added 31 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists. James scored the final four points for Los Angeles, all from the free-throw line.
The Knicks’ Jalen Brunson, who finished with 39 points and 10 assists, suffered a right ankle injury in overtime after contact with Austin Reaves and James. He left the game after making two free throws following the injury.
The Lakers trailed by 10 points with under seven minutes remaining in regulation but mounted a 19-6 run to regain the lead. The game went back and forth in the final minutes, ending in a tie at 107 before Jaxson Hayes’ free throws put the Lakers ahead for good.
Los Angeles struggled from three-point range for much of the game (7 of 27 in the first three quarters) but caught fire in the fourth and overtime (7 of 15), capitalizing on free throw opportunities in the extra period (5 of 6). The Knicks, meanwhile, had a chance to win in regulation but failed to get a shot off before the buzzer.
The victory improved the Lakers’ record to 9-2 since Dončić joined the team. The Knicks, currently fifth in the league standings, fell to 0-9 against the four teams ranked ahead of them. The Knicks face the LA Clippers on Friday, while the Lakers embark on a four-game road trip starting with a matchup against the Boston Celtics on Saturday.
