**London/New Delhi:** India has strongly condemned a security breach targeting External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his recent visit to London, accusing the UK government of indifference towards threats from Khalistani extremist groups. The incident, which saw pro-Khalistani protesters attempting to breach security barriers and shout anti-India slogans outside Chatham House on Wednesday, has prompted a sharp rebuke from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India has conveyed its deep concern to UK authorities, highlighting the incident as indicative of a larger pattern of leniency towards such groups. He emphasized that the UK’s response, while acknowledging the unacceptable nature of the protests, lacks sufficient action. “While we have noted the statement by the UK Foreign Office,” Jaiswal said, “our view of its sincerity will depend on the actions taken against the culprits on this and previous occasions.”
This security lapse follows a similar incident in March 2023 where Khalistani extremists removed the Indian national flag from the Indian High Commission in London. India previously criticized the UK government’s response to that incident, citing unacceptable indifference to the safety of Indian diplomats and personnel.
The MEA has reiterated its expectation that the UK government fulfill its diplomatic obligations to ensure the safety and security of visiting dignitaries. The ministry strongly condemned the protesters’ actions, describing them as a misuse of democratic freedoms. The UK Foreign Office, while condemning the attempts to disrupt public events, has yet to announce specific measures taken against those involved. India’s assessment of the UK’s commitment to addressing these threats will hinge on the tangible actions taken against the perpetrators.
