**SAMBHAL, Uttar Pradesh, March 7, 2025** – A Sambhal police officer’s suggestion that those uncomfortable with Holi colours should stay indoors has sparked widespread condemnation from opposition parties. The comments, made following a peace committee meeting ahead of the Holi festival, which coincides with Friday prayers during Ramzan, are seen as biased and insensitive.
Circle Officer Anuj Chaudhary reportedly stated that since Holi occurs only once a year, while Friday prayers happen 52 times annually, those sensitive to Holi colours should remain indoors. He emphasized the need for communal harmony and urged mutual respect between communities. While advocating against the forceful application of colours, he also likened the importance of both Holi and Eid celebrations.
However, this statement drew sharp criticism. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Sharvendra Bikram Singh accused the officer of acting as a BJP agent, while Uttar Pradesh Congress Media Committee Vice Chairman Manish Hindvi called for action against Chaudhary, asserting that such comments are unbefitting of a secular officer and could lead to anarchy. Hindvi stressed the officer’s responsibility to ensure a safe atmosphere for both Holi celebrations and Friday prayers.
The controversy comes after violence erupted in Sambhal last November during protests against a court-ordered survey of a mosque. The opposition parties’ condemnation highlights concerns about potential communal tensions and the need for unbiased policing during religious festivals. The administration maintains its commitment to maintaining peace and order and promises to strictly deal with any attempts to disrupt communal harmony.
