Fri Mar 07 16:17:17 UTC 2025: ## Philippines and Canada Forge Key Defense Pact Amidst South China Sea Tensions

**Manila, Philippines –** The Philippines and Canada have reached a significant agreement to bolster their defense cooperation in the face of increasing Chinese assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea. The pact, announced Friday by the Philippine Department of National Defense, will allow for joint military exercises and enhanced defense engagements between the two countries.

The agreement builds upon existing efforts by both nations to counter China’s actions in the region. Canada, along with other Western nations, has been increasing its military presence in the Indo-Pacific to uphold the rule of law and promote trade. The Philippines, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is actively pursuing stronger defense ties with friendly nations to strengthen its own security posture.

The new defense pact will provide a framework for increased collaboration, improved interoperability between forces, and more effective joint exercises and capacity-building initiatives. It is expected to facilitate larger-scale joint exercises, potentially including operations in the South China Sea near the western Philippines. While a specific signing date hasn’t been set, a Philippine official indicated it could happen within the next few months.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro emphasized the importance of building security alliances to deter China’s aggression, characterizing China’s actions as a global threat due to their potential to disrupt the vital South China Sea trade routes. The Philippines already has similar visiting forces agreements with the US, Australia, and Japan (pending legislative ratification), and is negotiating with New Zealand and France. Further agreements with countries like Germany, India, and Singapore are also being considered.

This development comes after Canada participated in joint naval and air maneuvers with the US, Australia, and the Philippines in the South China Sea last August, an operation that was shadowed by Chinese naval ships. Canada has consistently criticized China’s actions in the South China Sea, highlighting its commitment to addressing what it deems unlawful behavior. Previous agreements between Canada and the Philippines include a data-sharing agreement providing access to Canada’s Dark Vessel Detection System, which has already aided the Philippine coast guard in tracking Chinese vessels. The new defense pact represents a significant escalation in bilateral cooperation, further solidifying the alliance against China’s growing influence in the region.
