**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday defended its claim that boatmen profited significantly from the recently concluded Maha Kumbh Mela, pushing back against opposition allegations questioning the veracity of a reported Rs 30 crore earning by one boatman, Pintu Mahara.
While acknowledging the considerable sum attributed to Mahara, the government highlighted the overall economic benefits for thousands of boatmen involved in ferrying over 1.5 crore devotees during the 45-day religious event. A press statement cited the Prayagraj Navik Sangh president, Pappu Lal Nishad, confirming the operation of over 4,500 boats, employing approximately 13,000 boatmen. The government asserted that each boatman earned between Rs 8-9 lakh, leading many to plan new ventures. Anecdotal evidence was provided, detailing how individuals like Sanjeet Kumar Nishad and Balwant Nishad used their Kumbh earnings to fund daughters’ weddings and build homes, respectively.
The government further emphasized its initiative to provide skill training to over 1,000 boatmen, equipping them with skills in disaster management and digital payments.
However, opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, strongly criticized the government’s claims, questioning the reported Rs 30 crore earnings of Pintu Mahara. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav demanded an investigation into the matter, while Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai questioned the lack of GST payment on such substantial income and raised concerns about potential overcharging of devotees. Rai suggested that such profits could not have been achieved at government-prescribed rates.
The Maha Kumbh, held from January 13 to February 26, drew an estimated 65 crore devotees, according to the state government. The debate over the boatmen’s earnings continues, with the opposition demanding transparency and accountability.
