**Thanjavur, March 6, 2025** – The Thanjavur Corporation will receive ₹165 crore in funding to implement circular economy projects focusing on integrated waste management. The funding comes from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain 2.0 (CITIIS 2.0) program, a collaborative effort with the French Development Agency (AfD), Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the European Union (EU), and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).

Thanjavur, previously designated a Smart City under CITIIS 1.0, is one of 18 cities selected for the program’s first component, which provides financial and technical support for circular economy and waste management projects.

Mayor S. Ramanathan announced that initial projects include introducing electric vehicles for garbage collection across the city’s 51 wards. Future plans involve establishing a waste processing unit to produce refuse-derived fuel and creating micro-compost centers in areas annexed to the corporation. The corporation aims to achieve “clean city” status by 2026.
