**PESHAWAR, Pakistan (March 5, 2025)** – Pakistan observed a day of mourning today following a deadly twin suicide bombing at a military base in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which killed 18 people, including five soldiers, and injured 42 others. The attack, which occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, saw two suicide bombers breach the base’s perimeter wall before a firefight ensued.
Jaish Al-Fursan, a militant group linked to the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the bombing. The explosions damaged the base and a nearby mosque, where several worshippers were killed. Rescue workers recovered the bodies of three deceased worshippers trapped under the mosque’s rubble. Funeral prayers were held at a local sports complex. All educational institutions and most shops remained closed in Bannu as a mark of respect.
This attack is the latest in a series of recent violent incidents across Pakistan. Similar attacks have targeted Bannu in the past, including a suicide car bombing last November that killed 12 troops.
Elsewhere in the country, a bomb blast at a shop in Khuzdar, Balochistan province, killed three and wounded five. Baloch separatists are suspected, given their history of targeting those from other provinces. In Peshawar, an intelligence official was killed in a drive-by shooting.
The escalating violence underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Pakistan.
