**Islamabad, [Date]** – Pakistan has risen to the second position in the 2025 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), released by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), due to a dramatic surge in terrorist attacks and civilian casualties. The report, encompassing 163 countries representing nearly the entire global population, reveals a 45% increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan during 2024, exceeding 1,000 incidents for the first time since the index’s inception.
The number of terrorism-related deaths has also seen a consistent rise over the past five years, with the largest year-on-year increase in the last decade. This alarming escalation is largely attributed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been identified as the deadliest terrorist group in the country for the second consecutive year. TTP attacks increased by over 90%, resulting in 585 deaths in 2024 – a 91% increase from the previous year and accounting for 52% of all terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan. The group carried out 482 attacks in the country.
The report highlights the intensified cross-border attacks emanating from Afghanistan, particularly impacting the Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. These western border regions bore the brunt of the violence, accounting for over 96% of all terrorist attacks and deaths in Pakistan during 2024. The increase in terrorism follows the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, underscoring the growing regional instability. The IEP’s GTI uses data on terrorist incidents, casualties, injuries, and hostage situations to assess the global impact of terrorism.
