Thu Mar 06 14:14:39 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka’s HSRP Compliance Remains Low Despite Multiple Deadline Extensions
**Bengaluru, March 6, 2025** – Only 29% of vehicles in Karnataka registered before 2019 have installed High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), despite multiple deadline extensions, according to data released today. By the end of February 2025, 5.72 million out of a total of 20 million eligible vehicles had complied. Bengaluru Urban leads with 2.48 million HSRP installations, followed by Mysuru (407,830), Dakshina Kannada (276,014), Belagavi (261,807), and Shivamogga (206,812).
The initial deadline was November 17, 2023, but seven extensions later, the current deadline is March 31, 2025. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy attributed the slow progress to an ongoing Karnataka High Court case, which has mandated a status quo. After the deadline, fines of ₹500 (first offense) and ₹1,000 (subsequent offenses) will be levied.
Low awareness and an inconvenient application process are cited as major obstacles. Many motorists are unsure about HSRP requirements, while others report difficulties navigating online registration and long waiting times for plate installation. Adding to the problem, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked 185,000 cases in 2024 and 15,000 in January 2025 for vehicles with unauthorized modifications to number plates.
