JACKSON, Miss. – Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins this Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., marking the annual “spring forward” shift. This change, while familiar, continues to spark debate, with President Trump previously voicing his opposition and two bills currently in Congress aiming to make DST permanent.
While proponents argue DST saves energy and provides more daylight hours, health experts cite negative impacts on human health due to the biannual time shifts. The change to permanent DST is not without precedent; a 1974 attempt failed due to concerns about children traveling to school in pre-dawn darkness.
To ease the transition, Kroger is offering a limited number of free “Hour Back Boxes” containing breakfast essentials and over 39,000 breakfast food coupons. These are available online starting March 4th and 7th, respectively.
The upcoming changes will see clocks “fall back” on November 2nd. Most of the U.S. observes DST, with exceptions including Hawaii, most of Arizona, and several U.S. territories. Mississippi, however, participates.
Despite past presidential pronouncements against DST, the ultimate decision rests with Congress. The “Sunshine Protection Act of 2025” (Senate Bill 29 and House Resolution 139) seeks to permanently adopt DST. Passage would result in later sunrises and sunsets during winter months. The debate continues, with the practical implications and potential consequences of permanent DST remaining at the forefront.
