Thu Mar 06 13:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Alberta Joins Canadian Provinces in Liquor Boycott Against US Tariffs
**EDMONTON, Alberta –** Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced Wednesday that the province will halt all imports and sales of U.S. alcohol, escalating the trade war between Canada and the United States. This action follows President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods in response to concerns over fentanyl trafficking.
Smith characterized Trump’s tariffs as an “economic attack” and a “betrayal,” citing concerns over the President’s rhetoric regarding potential annexation. She directed the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis agency to cease purchasing American alcohol and announced a provincial advertising campaign promoting locally-made products.
Alberta joins Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Manitoba, who have already implemented similar bans or restrictions on U.S. liquor imports in retaliation. British Columbia Premier David Eby went so far as to call for a consumer boycott of U.S. goods and tourism.
The Canadian federal government has also retaliated, imposing its own 25% tariffs on $107 billion worth of American goods. While some tariffs took effect immediately, others will be implemented within 21 days and will remain in place until the U.S. withdraws its tariffs.
Despite a phone call between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Trump, where the two leaders reportedly discussed the tariffs, the trade dispute remains unresolved. Trump maintains that Canada has not done enough to curb fentanyl flow across the border, a claim disputed by Canadian officials. The White House has granted a one-month exemption to major automakers from the new tariffs. Economic experts warn that the escalating trade war could negatively impact both countries’ economies.
