**NEW DELHI, March 4, 2025** – Thousands of Delhi residents endure grueling commutes, leaving home four to five hours early to reach work on time, only to face unpredictable delays on the city’s neglected suburban railway network. A new documentary from The Hindu explores the reasons behind the system’s failure, highlighting overcrowding, erratic schedules, and safety concerns that disproportionately affect women.
Despite its potential, the Delhi Suburban Railway, dating back to the colonial era, remains severely underutilized, unlike thriving suburban systems in Mumbai, Tokyo, and Chicago. The film features interviews with commuters struggling daily with the broken system, as well as insights from Dr. Velmurugan Senathipati on necessary reforms. For many, the Delhi local is the only affordable commute, raising questions about the system’s viability and the responsibility of policymakers and railway authorities to revive it. The documentary, produced by Aniket Singh Chauhan and Zeeshan Akhtar, is available now on The Hindu website.
