Tue Mar 04 05:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Trade War Escalates: China and Canada Retaliate Against New US Tariffs

**Hong Kong/Ottawa/Mexico City** – A new wave of retaliatory tariffs has been unleashed in the escalating trade dispute between the United States and its major trading partners. Following the implementation of a 25% US tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% increase on Chinese imports, both China and Canada swiftly announced their own countermeasures.

China will impose tariffs of up to 15% on a range of US goods, including agricultural products like chicken, wheat, and soybeans, effective March 10. This follows earlier retaliatory tariffs imposed in response to previous US actions. The Chinese government stated these new tariffs harm the multilateral trade system and negatively impact American businesses and consumers.

Canada, similarly, will implement tariffs of up to 25% on $107 billion worth of US goods. $20.7 billion in tariffs will take immediate effect, with the remaining $86.3 billion to follow in 21 days. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that these tariffs are a direct response to the US actions, predicting higher prices for Americans and potential job losses. He also criticized the US tariffs as violating the USMCA trade agreement.

Mexico is expected to announce its response later today. The three countries together account for over 40% of total US imports, making this escalation a significant blow to US trade relations. The ongoing trade conflict shows no sign of de-escalation, raising concerns about further economic disruption globally.
