**Hyderabad, March 4, 2025** – Malka Komaraiah, a businessman running a chain of educational institutions, scored a stunning upset victory in the recent Telangana MLC elections, defeating established teacher union-backed candidates. Komaraiah, a BJP nominee, won the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Teachers’ constituency by a margin of over 5,700 votes, securing 12,959 first preference votes against his nearest rival.
The win is a significant blow to the powerful Progressive Recognised Teachers Union (PRTU), United Teachers Front (UTF), and State Teachers Union (STU), many of which enjoy backing from the Congress and the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). While the elections are technically non-partisan, both the Congress and BRS are alleged to have unofficially supported PRTU candidate Vanga Mahender Reddy.
Komaraiah’s victory is attributed to a vigorous campaign spearheaded by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay. The BJP campaign focused on the perceived failures of the BRS and Congress governments to address teacher welfare and IT tax exemptions.
However, the BJP’s success was not replicated in the Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal Teachers’ constituency, where their candidate lost to a PRTU candidate. This has led to internal discussion within the BJP regarding the uneven distribution of campaign resources. The unexpected outcome has prompted introspection among the established teacher unions about their campaign strategies.
