**DHAKA, Bangladesh (March 3, 2025)** – Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, has urged for the meticulous preservation of records detailing alleged human rights abuses under the previous administration of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Yunus met with United Nations officials on Sunday to emphasize the importance of accurate documentation for achieving justice and uncovering the truth.
Specific incidents cited by Yunus included the crackdown on demonstrators at Shapla Chattar, police brutality following the Delwar Hossain Sayedee verdict, and years of alleged extrajudicial killings. The UN officials, including Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis and human rights expert Huma Khan, reaffirmed their commitment to assisting Bangladesh in this process, offering technical assistance and capacity building.
Lewis highlighted the UN’s recent fact-finding report on human rights violations following the July-August 2024 uprising that ousted the Awami League government. This report, to be presented by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk at the Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 5th, was praised by Yunus as “timely.”
The meeting also addressed the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis, with Lewis expressing deep concern over dwindling international aid. She stressed the urgent need for $15 million per month to maintain essential food supplies and other necessities for the refugees. The upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Bangladesh from March 13-16 is hoped to refocus global attention on this critical issue.
