**WASHINGTON, D.C.** – A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals significant challenges for President Trump’s early tenure, with majorities expressing disapproval of his approach to governance and the direction of the country. While Republicans largely support the president’s actions, independents – a crucial voting bloc – show widespread opposition, potentially jeopardizing his future political standing.
The poll, conducted from February 24-26 among nearly 1,700 adults, paints a picture of a deeply divided nation. A slim majority (53%) believe the state of the union is weak, and a similar percentage (54%) feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. While these figures represent an improvement from recent years under the Biden administration, the underlying dissatisfaction remains significant.
Independents, in particular, express deep concern. Two-thirds view the state of the union as weak, and overwhelmingly disapprove of Trump’s cuts to federal government spending (55% deem them harmful), his foreign policy approach, and his handling of the economy. They also express skepticism about his adherence to court orders, with 65% believing he is rushing through changes without considering the consequences.
Trump’s approval rating stands at 45%, an improvement from his departure in 2021 but significantly lower than the approval rating of other newly inaugurated presidents (except for Trump’s first term). Among independents, approval is even lower, at just 34%.
The poll also highlights the unpopularity of Elon Musk, who is advising Trump on government restructuring. Only 39% view Musk favorably. Furthermore, the public is largely against Trump’s proposed dismantling of the Department of Education (63% oppose) and taking control of Gaza (71% oppose).
While Trump enjoys support from Republicans, who overwhelmingly approve of his actions, his approval rating remains largely tied to the Republican party, suggesting a lack of widespread national appeal beyond his base. The poll underscores a growing lack of confidence in the U.S. system of checks and balances, falling from 66% in December to only 43% currently.
The findings come a day before Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, which, despite not being officially a State of the Union address, will serve as a de facto assessment of his early presidency. The president’s upcoming address will provide a platform to address these concerns and potentially attempt to rally broader public support. However, the poll suggests a steep uphill climb.
