Tue Mar 04 00:17:00 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Truce Falters as Israel Threatens “Unimaginable Consequences”
**Jerusalem, March 4, 2025** – Tensions soared in the Israel-Palestine conflict as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark warning to Hamas, threatening “unimaginable consequences” if the Palestinian group fails to return the remaining hostages held in Gaza. This escalation comes as the first phase of a six-week ceasefire ends, with negotiations for a permanent peace stalled.
Netanyahu’s threat, echoed by Defence Minister Israel Katz, followed Israel’s decision to halt all aid and supplies to Gaza, a move condemned internationally. Egypt and Qatar, key mediators in the truce, criticized the action as a violation of the ceasefire agreement. Germany and Britain also voiced their opposition, highlighting the illegitimacy of using humanitarian aid as leverage.
Hamas accused Israel of sabotaging the truce, claiming Israel’s push for a ceasefire extension was a tactic to avoid serious negotiations. A senior Hamas official, Osama Hamdan, alleged Israel actively worked to undermine the agreement.
The dispute centers on the transition to the second phase of the ceasefire, which Hamas insists upon to achieve a lasting peace. Israel, however, has hinted at more drastic measures, including potentially displacing Gazans from the northern part of the territory and cutting off electricity, according to reports by Israeli public broadcaster Kan.
This comes amidst preparations for an Arab League summit in Cairo to discuss Gaza’s reconstruction. The summit aims to counter US President Donald Trump’s controversial plan, which calls for the displacement of the Palestinian population in Gaza. Netanyahu, however, praised Trump’s plan, stating it was time to allow Gazans to leave.
The ongoing conflict has devastated Gaza, causing widespread damage, displacement, and hunger, according to the UN. Over 48,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes, while over 1,200 Israelis died in the initial Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. 58 hostages, including 34 confirmed dead, remain in Gaza.
A stabbing attack in Haifa, Israel, on Monday, which left one dead and four injured, further heightened tensions. The assailant, a member of Israel’s Druze community, was killed by authorities.
The fragile truce, which began on January 19, now hangs precariously in the balance, raising serious concerns about the possibility of renewed large-scale conflict. The international community is urging both sides to de-escalate and resume meaningful negotiations.
