**Mumbai, India –** A 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life after suffering 60% burns in an alleged arson attack in Mumbai’s Andheri area on Sunday night. Police have arrested a 30-year-old man, Jitendra alias Jitu Tambe, in connection with the incident.
The victim and the accused were acquaintances, having been friends for the past two months. According to police, the victim’s mother had recently asked Tambe to cease contact with her daughter. The exact motive remains under investigation, but police say the attack occurred around 11:30 pm behind a hospital in the Marol Gaonthan area.
Witnesses reported that Tambe allegedly poured petrol on the girl while she was sitting with friends and set her ablaze. She sustained severe burns to her face, neck, stomach, private parts, hands, and legs. The victim, currently hospitalized in critical condition at Dr. R.N. Cooper Municipal Hospital, is unable to speak.
Tambe also suffered burn injuries during the incident and is receiving medical treatment. A case has been registered against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by using acid or a similar substance. The investigation is ongoing.
