Tue Mar 04 11:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Massive Power Outage Causes Chaos at BWI Airport

**Baltimore, MD** – A major power outage at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) Monday morning caused widespread flight delays and cancellations, stranding thousands of travelers. The outage, which began around 7:40 a.m., affected Terminals A, B, and C, leading to approximately 150 flight delays and 50 cancellations, according to FlightAware.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily paused Southwest Airlines flights while crews worked to restore power. The airport utilized air stairs for deplaning passengers on some flights. Power was fully restored by noon, but the airport warned of continued delays and lengthy lines at ticket counters, checkpoints, and concessions. The airport advised passengers to check directly with their airlines for updated flight information.

The outage, attributed to a downed power line near the airport by Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, also resulted in road closures south of the airport due to a fire and falling wires. The FAA stated that Monday’s delays represented 6% of total delays experienced at BWI this year. Images shared on social media showed extensive lines of passengers waiting at the airport. Despite the restoration of power, the ripple effect of the outage is expected to impact air travel for hours.
