Tue Mar 04 08:58:51 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Assembly in Uproar Over ASHA Workers’ Strike
**Thiruvananthapuram, March 4, 2025** – The Kerala Assembly witnessed heated exchanges and pandemonium today as the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) protested the state government’s handling of the ongoing strike by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). The UDF moved an adjournment motion highlighting the ASHA workers’ demands for better remuneration.
UDF MLA Rahul Mamkootathil accused the ruling CPI(M) and CITU of undermining the ASHA workers’ struggle for fair wages. He questioned the government’s decision to increase the salary and travel allowance of a special envoy while claiming a lack of funds from the Centre to adequately compensate ASHAs.
Health Minister Veena George countered that Kerala provides the highest honorarium to ASHAs, with 90% earning ₹10,000-₹13,000 monthly, including ₹9,400 from the state. She noted that a significant number of ASHAs also hold other positions, such as elected representatives or MGNREGS workers. She blamed the Centre for reducing its contribution to the ASHA program.
The Speaker denied leave for the adjournment motion. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan criticized the Minister’s figures as manipulated, arguing that the Centre’s contribution to the National Health Mission (NHM), not solely ASHA incentives, is shared 60-40. He challenged the government to account for its share of NHM funding over the years and criticized the ruling party’s response to the strike, given its history of supporting workers’ protests. He called for the Chief Minister’s intervention to resolve the issue.
The ensuing debate led to disruptions and ultimately, the Opposition’s walkout after the Speaker cut short Mr. Satheesan’s speech, causing further uproar and the adjournment of the House. The ASHA workers’ strike and the government’s response remain a major point of contention in Kerala.
