Tue Mar 04 06:56:04 UTC 2025: **Delhi High Court Stays Suspension of Jamia Millia Islamia Students**

NEW DELHI, March 4, 2025 – The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed the suspension of 17 Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students who were punished for protesting on campus without prior permission. The students, who had been staging demonstrations against a university ban on unauthorized protests and meetings, were suspended earlier this month for protesting and allegedly defacing property.

The court’s decision follows a plea filed by one of the suspended students. The High Court has ordered the formation of a panel, overseen by the university’s Vice Chancellor, to resolve the matter. JMI is required to submit a report to the court. More students are expected to challenge their suspensions individually in the coming days.

The initial suspensions stemmed from a protest against the university’s ban on unauthorized gatherings and the earlier suspension of four PhD scholars for participating in a demonstration marking the fifth anniversary of clashes between anti-CAA protesters and police on the JMI campus (December 14, 2024). The students involved in Tuesday’s court case, along with others, have been holding protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
