**Hyderabad, March 4, 2025** – Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad reported a significant 22% increase in cargo volume in 2024, handling a total of 1.8 lakh metric tonnes. This growth was fueled by a substantial 36% rise in international cargo, reaching 1.08 lakh metric tonnes, while domestic cargo saw a 5% increase to 72,395 metric tonnes.
Pharmaceuticals accounted for a dominant 72% of total exports, solidifying Hyderabad’s position as a major hub for high-value shipments. Other key export sectors included electrical and electronic items and engineering goods. The US and Europe were the leading export destinations, receiving 51% of outbound shipments.
RGIA’s increased international connectivity played a crucial role, with over 20 global destinations served via passenger and freighter flights. Airlines like Lufthansa Cargo, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines expanded their freighter services to and from Hyderabad, catering to the rising demand.
To accommodate the growing cargo volume, the airport is undergoing significant infrastructure expansion. Cargo Terminal 1 is being upgraded with new facilities, including a domestic terminal, an international courier/express terminal, and a dedicated export perishables terminal. Construction of Cargo Terminal 2 is also underway, with Phase I slated for completion this year. An additional 20,000 square feet of warehousing space is being added to the RGIA cargo village.
Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, stated the airport’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure and optimizing processes to meet diverse cargo needs. The expansion positions RGIA to further enhance its role as a leading cargo hub in India.
