**Hyderabad, March 4, 2025** – Telangana and Andhra Pradesh farmers are urging the Indian government to adopt a policy framework that embraces advancements in agricultural biotechnology, including genetically modified (GM) crops. At a press conference organized by the National Farmers Empowerment Initiative (NFEI), farmers highlighted the need for access to modern technologies to boost productivity, ensure food security, and improve their livelihoods.
Speakers emphasized that the issue is not just about science, but also farmers’ right to choose technologies readily available to their counterparts in countries like the US, Brazil, and Argentina. They cited the success of Bt cotton in India as evidence of the potential benefits of biotechnology, arguing that similar advancements should be extended to other crops.
Vellangan Reddy, a cotton farmer, recounted the transformative impact of Bt cotton, noting increased yields and reduced pesticide use. He expressed frustration over delays in applying similar technology to other crops. Dyavari Narayana, a farmer cultivating pulses and millets, underscored the challenges faced by Indian farmers due to unpredictable weather and pest infestations, contrasting their situation with the success of farmers in other nations utilizing biotechnology.
Dr. Venkatram Vasantavada, Director of the Alliance for Agri Innovation, stressed the need for evidence-based policies. He cited the safe and successful adoption of biotech crops in many countries, leading to increased farmer income, higher yields, and improved environmental sustainability. He argued that ignoring this technology would hinder India’s food security and agricultural growth goals. The farmers’ plea comes amidst a national debate on the use of GM crops in India.
