**New Delhi, March 4, 2025** – Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar was granted bail on Tuesday by the Delhi High Court in connection with the 2021 murder of Sagar Dhankar, a former junior national wrestling champion. Kumar, who has been in jail for three-and-a-half years, was released on a personal bond of ₹50,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
The case stems from a May 2021 incident at Chhatrasal Stadium where Dhankar and his friends were allegedly assaulted by Kumar and others in a dispute over property. Dhankar’s death was attributed to cerebral damage caused by a blunt object, according to the post-mortem report.
Kumar’s lawyer, R.K. Malik, argued that the trial was progressing slowly, with only 31 of 200 witnesses examined so far, and that his client should be granted bail due to the extensive delay. While the prosecution opposed the plea, the court ultimately sided with the defense. The trial is expected to continue.
