**Ottawa, March 4, 2025** – Canada will implement 25% tariffs on US$107 billion worth of American goods starting today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday. This retaliatory measure is in response to proposed US tariffs on Canadian products.
The tariffs will be rolled out in two phases. A 25% tariff on C$30 billion (US$21 billion) of US goods will take effect immediately, while tariffs on a further C$125 billion (US$86 billion) will be imposed in three weeks.
Prime Minister Trudeau stated that these tariffs will remain in place until the US withdraws its proposed tariffs. He also indicated that Canada is exploring additional non-tariff barriers in conjunction with provincial and territorial governments should the US tariffs persist. The announcement follows a press conference held by Prime Minister Trudeau in London on Sunday.
